Corona Del Mar Dental Implant Experts List the Top 13 Dental Sins, PART 1

Most Corona Del Mar residents, when asked, report that a beautiful, healthy smile lies in the top three of the things they find attractive about another person. Not surprisingly then, having a beautiful, healthy smile is integral to a healthy self-esteem and good social confidence. Maintaining good oral health and hygiene isn't difficult; it just comes down to being disciplined and having the right education and awareness.

And so, as a Corona Del Mar dental Implant surgeon, I will be explaining to all you readers in this two-part article series the top 15 dental sins that could lead to the early demise of your beautiful, youthful smile!

Not Brushing Frequently Enough

Good oral hygiene is integral to good oral health. You should be brushing at least twice per day for two minutesat a time. Most Americans only brush their teeth for a total of 38 seconds per day, which is not nearly enough to keep your teeth clear of oral bacteria. Also brush your gums and tongue.

Not Flossing

If you don't floss, you're leaving 35% of your tooth's surfaces unclean. Flossing removes all the plaque (bacteria) and food debris that accumulates between your teeth during the day. You should floss every day, preferably before you go to bed at night so that all that disgusting detritus isn't allowed to sit between your teeth overnight. There's a reason Corona Del Mar dentists urge patients to floss every day and this is precisely why!

Drinking Soda, Fruit Juice or Energy Drinks When You're Thirsty

Soda, fruit juice and energy drinks are not only packed with sugar, they're also extremely acidic. So, drinking more than one can or glass per day can leave you at a greater risk of cavities and tooth decay; and it can leave your teeth more vulnerable to acid erosion.

Drink water if you're thirsty!

Snacking a Lot

Every time you eat, the acid levels in your mouth increase which can cause your dental enamel to soften. This can lead to erosion, so the more you snack, then the more at risk your teeth are.

Eat three square meals a day, drink plenty of water and try to limit snacking. If you always find yourself hungry in the afternoon or are on some special diet and need to snack frequently, invest in some sugar-free gum with Xylitol, as this helps to remineralize your dental enamel.

A Diet High in Sugar and Refined Carbohydrates

Bacteria love sugar. The more you eat, the faster they multiply and the more riddled with these microorganisms your mouth will be. The math is simple.

Not Seeing the Dentist and Oral Hygienist Frequently Enough

Keeping your teeth and gums in good shape is all about preventative care. This includes a rigorous home oral hygiene routine and regular scheduled check-ups with your dentist and oral hygienist.

It's not always possible for you to know when you have potentially serious dental problems, because not all dental problems cause toothache or visible symptoms. Your dentist will be able to diagnose and provide prompt treatment for problems in their infancy; before they can permanently affect the health of your tooth or teeth.
