Glaucoma Guidelines: A Way to Improve Care?
Glaucoma is the leading cause of vision loss and irreversible blindness worldwide. In most patients with glaucoma, loss of vision is insidious and usually painless. However, early detection and treatment of glaucoma is recognised as beneficial in arresting or retarding glaucoma. Consequently, guidelines have been drawn up to improve the care and outcome of patients with glaucoma.

In the US, there are 2 set of guidelines for the care of patients with glaucoma. Although many essential elements are the same, the guidelines do differ in some important ways. Whether these differences have a major impact in the care given to patients and whether the care provided conforms to the guidelines has yet to be established.
