How to Cure a Fast Heart Rate
- 1). Consult with your doctor to find out if taking a daily medication would alleviate your symptoms and control your heart rate. Drugs such as beta blockers can reduce the amount of adrenaline that passes into the heart, and this takes some of the strain off the heart. Once adjusted to the medication, the heart rate should stay around 80 to 90 beats per minute.
- 2). Learn breathing techniques. This can be very effective for a person whose resting heart rate is over 100 beats per minute. Practicing breathing slowly in through the nose and exhaling out the mouth can decrease the heart rate by 10 to 20 beats per minute. An appropriate amount of oxygen entering and leaving the heart will help relax the mind and body. This allows the heart to work less and beat more efficiently.
- 3). Remove foods that are high in sodium from your diet. High sodium content increases water retention in the body, and this can force the heart to work much harder while trying to eliminate the extra fluid in the body. When the heart is working harder than average, it tires out faster, which can actually cause a higher heart rate while the body is trying to overcompensate.
