How to Make Cat & Dog Masks
- 1). Gather construction paper that matches the color of the type of cat or dog you want the mask to represent. For example, you can make a simple yellow tabby using yellow paper or a dalmatian dog with white paper. Alternatively, paint the color of your animal onto a paper plate using water colors. Allow the paint to dry before proceeding.
- 2). Spread glue along the back of a paper plate and stick the construction paper over the glue. Wait for a few seconds until the glue begins to dry, then cut the edges of the paper off so that it's circular, like the plate.
- 3). Cut out triangles of construction paper for your cat's ears, using the same color paper as the face of the mask. Glue the ears to the tops of the masks and let the glue begin to dry before proceeding. For a dog mask, use fabric instead of paper, cut the ears longer and fold them over so they look floppy. To connect fabric to the paper plate, use staples or a hot glue gun; these are not safe for young children to use on their own so have an adult do it.
- 4). Draw facial details on the masks. Two circles, or football shapes, for the eyes, and a curvy "W" shape for the mouth. Draw a circle above the mouth for the nose. Add any other details, such as spots for the dog or stripes for the cat. Alternatively, shape the features with pieces of yarn and glue them in place on the plate or construction paper.
- 5). Cut out short pieces of yarn and glue them onto the mask near the mouth and nose area for whiskers. Alternatively, draw these features on using a marker rather than gluing on yarn. Cut out the eyes of the masks so that the mask-wearer can see through.
- 6). Make a small hole on each side of the mask and pass elastic string through one hole, behind the mask, and through the other. Knot each end of the elastic strings in front so that they don't slip out of the holes.
