Defeat Johto Gym Leaders

• Defeat each of the eight Kanto region gym leaders to earn their gym badges. Each gym leader specializes in a different type of Pokemon (flying, bug, normal, ghost, fighting, steel, ice and dragon), so you will need to develop a well-rounded team of creatures.
  
  

Defeat the Elite Four

• Travel to the Indigo Plateau, which is northeast from your hometown of New Bark Town. At this battle field, defeat the Elite Four and Pokemon Champion. You must battle these opponents consecutively, so stock up on healing items. Afterward, you can return to New Bark Town and receive the S.S. Aqua ticket from Professor Elm. The ship sets sail for Kanto from the Olivine City harbor.
  
  

Defeat the Kanto Gym Leaders

• Travel through the Kanto region and defeat the eight gym leaders for their gym badges. These gym leaders specialize in the following types of Pokemon: electric, psychic, grass, water, poison, rock and fire. The final gym leader, Blue, uses a diverse team. After the battle, continue to train your Pokemon; Red's team of creatures will range from level 80 to 88.
  
  

Return to the Reception Gate

• Visit Professor Oak in Pallet Town, which is located in southwest Kanto. Oak will give you HM08, an item that contains the Rock Climb ability. You will need this technique to scale Mt. Silver. After your stop in Pallet Town, you can return to the Victory Road Reception Gate by traveling northwest from Viridian City in western Kanto. The western path will now be unguarded.
