How to Replace a Timing Belt on a '98 Trooper
- 1). Remove the air cleaner assembly and the upper radiator fan shroud, using the appropriate sockets. Remove the accessory drive belt by loosening the accessory drive belt tensioner and lifting the belt off the pulleys. Remove the cooling fan and fan pulley, using the appropriate sockets.
- 2). Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner and guide pulley by unbolting them and pulling them off the block. Vacuum the Freon out of the system using a reclaimer. Remove the air conditioning compressor and the power steering pump using the appropriate sockets.
- 3). Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt using special crankshaft pulley holding tool #J-8614-01. Remove the crankshaft pulley and the three timing belt covers. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the timing mark at the 3 o’clock position on the crankshaft, the timing mark on the right camshaft (as you are facing the engine) is at 2 o’clock, and the timing mark on the left camshaft is at the 11 o’clock position. The No. 2 cylinder must be at top dead center. If not, turn the engine over until the marks line up and the No. 2 cylinder is on top dead center. The firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6. The No. 1 cylinder is the first cylinder on the passenger side, and the No. 2 cylinder is the first cylinder on the driver’s side.
- 4). Remove the timing belt tensioner bolts, the auto tensioner and the timing belt. Check the tensioner to see if it is leaking oil. If so, replace it. Press the tensioner pushrod in, using a vise or press, until a 1.4 mm pin can be inserted into the hole on the body of the tensioner. This holds the pushrod in place.
- 5). Install the timing belt, starting on the camshaft sprockets and the water pump pulley, making sure the white lines on the belt are lined up with the sprockets’ timing marks. Route the timing belt down to the crankshaft socket.
- 6). Install the crankshaft pulley temporarily. Hand-tighten the bolt. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise just enough to take up the slack in the timing belt. Keep tension on the driver’s side of the belt, watching the timing marks to ensure they stay aligned. Push the tensioner pulley against the belt using your hand. Bolt the tensioner to the block, tightening the bolts to 18 foot-pounds of torque. Remove the 1.4 mm pin from the tensioner.
- 7). Turn the crankshaft clockwise twice and line up the timing marks. If the timing marks do not line up, remove the timing belt and repeat the procedure. If the marks line up, remove the crankshaft bolt and pulley.
- 8). Install the rest of the parts in reverse order of removal. Install the crankshaft pulley, using the crankshaft pulley holding tool #J-8614-01 to hold the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 123 foot-pounds of torque. Vacuum the air conditioning system with the reclaimer, then add Freon.
