The straps.

Padding is not only there to protect the laptop from outside elements, it should also protect the laptop from items in adjoining sections.

Size and pockets.
It is important to have enough pockets, or you will end up having to take another bag as well.
There should be enough room for your power cable, phone, ipod and documents.
However well designed a bag is, if it is to fulfill the criteria of best laptop backpack it also need to be well made.
It is worth buying from a reputable name as there is nothing worse than your bag giving way went you are out of the office.
One last word of advice, if you have a large screen laptop be sure to check that it will fit in the bag.
