A Guide to Fishing in Belize
- Fishermen would be hard pressed to find a better spot than along the Caribbean coast. Many of the rivers that open into the Caribbean are teeming with fish and even the most novice fisherman will catch one. The fishing season is year-round, but the peak time starts in June and ends in early September.
- Different fish are found in different locations. Fisherman looking for tarpon, snook or jack should fish in the estuaries. Lagoons are known for bonefish and barracuda. Fisherman taking boat rides to the deep sea will catch sailfish, marlin, bonito, tuna and much more
- Although anglers have the most luck in the deep water, fishing from the shore can be just as fun. Light tackle and small spinners will catch local reef fish. Local fishing guides can dispense advice, locations and gear for a reasonable price.
- Tourists looking for a bigger catch can arrange a boat tour with their resort. Most resorts have their own boatmen who will take tourists out for the day and show them where to fish. The resorts will also prepare an angler's catch for supper at no extra cost.
- The cost of deep water fishing tours depends on several factors: the type of fishing, the size of the boat, the number of passengers and the time of year. Average cost is around $100 to $175 per person. That includes a full day of fishing, the bait and tackle, beverages and lunch.
