How to Make a Large WordPress Blog Smaller
- 1). Log in to WordPress and maximize the "Posts" pane in the left navigation menu. Click "Categories" to view your post categories.
- 2). Browse through your list of categories. Pay particular attention to the number of posts each category contains, listed in the right-most column of the list. Tick the box next to categories with insignificant numbers of posts -- less than 10 per cent of your blog's total posts is a good guideline -- select "Delete" from the "Bulk Actions" menu and click "Apply." Deleting categories doesn't delete any posts to which they were previously ascribed. It does delete each extraneous category from your blog's site map, decreasing its size and complexity.
- 3). Hover your mouse over the "Posts" pane once again and click "Post Tags." Scroll through your tags, once again deleting those ascribed to an insignificant numbers of posts. Moreso than with categories, which are larger classified and therefore usually number less, it's easy to load up your WordPress blog with literally thousands of tags that link only to one or two posts -- and again, each occupies valuable space in your blog's site map, increasing the overall size of your blog and making it less attractive to search engines.
- 4). Click the "Posts" link under the "Posts" pane and browse through your posts themselves to make sure all are pertinent to the current aim of your blog. Tick the box next to any post you want to remove from your blog, then select "Delete" from the "Bulk Actions" menu at the top of the list and click "Apply."
