Homemade Outdoor Lights
- 1). Locate a flat working space to begin your project. The space should have a raised table and protection from the weather. Gather all the tools needed for the project and place them in the work area.
- 2). Lay a 1-by-6-inch board on the working surface. Cut the board into two smaller boards measuring 3 feet long. Repeat with the second board. Dispose of the small scraps of wood, or set them aside for another project. These boards will be the side boards for the lamp post.
- 3). Arrange the four side boards to form a long rectangle. The sides should overlap each other, forming a 5-inch square opening at each end.
- 4). Glue the four boards together with wood glue. Reinforce the glue bond with wood screws every 6 inches along each side. This forms the post for the light. Set this work aside for later.
- 1). Place a 2-by-8-inch board on the flat surface. Measure 7 1/8 inches from the end of the board, and make a mark there. Measure and mark 7 1/8 inches from the first mark. Cut straight through the board at each of the locations you marked. This will leave you with one top and one bottom piece. Label these pieces as top and bottom and set them aside.
- 2). Drill a 1/2-inch hole through the center of the bottom piece. This hole will accommodate the electrical wire.
- 3). Cut a small groove in the bottom piece from the hole in the center to the edge of the wood. The electrical cord will run through this groove and allow the light to sit flat on the ground.
- 4). Drill a 1/2-inch hole in the center of the top piece. Install the globe lighting kit to the top board. Follow the kit instructions carefully.
- 1). Thread the electric cord from the light kit trough the hole in the top piece, then through the light post. Screw the top piece to the top of the light post using wood screws. Make sure all of the cord has gone through the post.
- 2). Thread the end of the cord through the bottom piece and push the bottom piece up to the bottom of the post. Screw the bottom piece into place using wood screws.
- 3). Set the light up on the bottom piece, with the globe light at the top. Run the end of the electric cord through the cut groove on the bottom piece.
- 4). Fill all cracks and screw holes in wood with wood filler. Paint or stain the wood with an outdoor product. Let the paint or stain dry thoroughly before using the lamp.
- 5). Place the light in the desired area and plug it into a grounded electrical outlet. Disconnect the lamp from the electrical source when it is not in use.
