Do It Yourself Evaporative Cooler

    • 1). Measure the blower hole of the squirrel cage fan.

    • 2). Mark out an equivalent-sized hole on the front of the plastic bin. Bear in mind the hole should be centrally positioned and towards the top of the front face of the bin.

    • 3). Cut out the hole, a quarter inch inside the marked lines, with the utility knife.

    • 4). Turn the bin around and cut out a rectangular section from the backside. Leave a gap of approximately 3 inches between the sides of the hole and the sides of the bin. Remember, you will be pouring water into the bin so you cannot make the bottom side of the hole too low.

    • 5). Place the fan into the box and position its blower hole around the hole that you made on the front side of the bin. Attach with nuts and bolts and a liberal amount of duct tape.

    • 6). Drill two holes close to a one of bin's top corners, ensuring they are big enough for the hardware's power leads.

    • 7). Cut an appropriate length of PVC piping and drill several evenly spaced holes along one side.

    • 8). Place the fountain pump into the bin and attach its tubing to the PVC pipe, then place a plug in the end of the pipe.

    • 9). Position the holed pipe on top of the cut-to-sized aspen pad and enclose in a mesh filter material. Place into the back of the box ensuring it big enough to cover the hole.

Run the fan/pump power leads through the two holes, connect to power and test the system.
