Ski Resorts in Sandpoint, Idaho

    Schweitzer Mountain Resort

    • Schweitzer Mountain Resort is only seven miles from downtown. The resort has 2,900 acres of skiable terrain, including 92 trails. The vertical drop is 2,400 feet with a top elevation of 6,400 feet. In addition to downhill skiing, the resort also has 32 km of cross country skiing and three different terrain parks. Of the resort's nine lifts, two are open daily for night skiing. Snowmobiling, snowshoeing and tubing are also available on-site.

      Schweitzer Village has hotels, a spa, a gift shop, three restaurants and a gourmet food market. Lodging options include the Selkirk and White Pine Lodges, as well as condo rental. The lodges are located on the slopes of the mountain and have an outdoor heated pool and hot tubs. The Solstice Spa is in the Selkirk Lodge. Childcare is available for a full day. Kids 4 and up get ski lessons as part of the daycare package.

    Silver Mountain Resort

    • Silver Mountain Resort is in Kellogg, Idaho, about an hour and a half drive southeast from Sandpoint. The resort has 1,600 acres of skiable terrain with 73 trails, and snow cat skiing in areas outside of the lifts. It has one terrain park, and offers tubing, snowshoeing and 20 km of cross country skiing trails.

      The one hotel on the property, the Morning Star Lodge, is in the Gondola Village shopping and dining area. It has access to the Silver Rapids indoor water park, which, according to the website, is Idaho's largest. There are seven restaurants on the property, including two on the mountainside. Gondola Village is also home to a spa that offers manicures, salon services, tanning and massages.

    Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area

    • Lookout Pass is close to the Montana/Idaho state line on I-90 and just under two hours drive from Sandpoint. It's the smallest of the three with 590 skiable acres four lifts and 34 trails. The vertical drop at the resort is 1,150 feet and the area receives an average snowfall of 400 inches per year. There are two terrain parks, one of which features a 1,111 foot quarter pipe. The resort is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for much of the season, although it is open seven days during Christmas vacation.

      There are no lodging options on-site but the resort has lodging and ski package deals with numerous area hotels. It has three restaurants, including one in the mountaintop lodge. One of its programs is the Free Ski School for kids aged 6 to 17 years. The school has operated this program for 70 years and is free for the first 500 kids that sign up. Lessons at the school run every Saturday morning from January to March.
