How to Troubleshoot a Gas Hot Water Tank
- 1). Check the pilot light. Before looking for any other issue, ensure the source of heat is working on the unit. If the pilot is not working, turn off the gas and contact a professional to diagnosis the issue and relight the pilot.
- 2). Check the thermostat. If the water heater is not heating the water, or there is not enough hot water, the temperature may be set too low.
- 3). Look for the source of any leaks. If water is dripping, use a flashlight to follow the trail of the drip. If the source is a pipe, turn off the water source and repair the leak or replace the pipe. If no drip is apparent, continue with troubleshooting.
- 4). Check the temperature-pressure relief valve. Refer to the owner's manual to locate the valve. If the pressure of the water is too high going into the tank, or the temperature is set too high on the unit, the valve will release water. If water is present around the valve, adjust the temperature on the tank.
- 5). Clean the vent. On gas hot water heaters, a vent is present for the unit to breathe. If it is clogged, condensation will occur and the heater will not work properly.
- 6). Adjust all connections in and out of the tank. Tighten all the connectors and reset the valves and thermostats to the manufacturer's recommended settings. Loose connections and maladjusted valves may cause issues with leaking around the tank.
