How to Replace a Fusible Link in an '87 Mustang 5.0
- 1). Disconnect the ground battery cable (black) using a wrench.
- 2). Remove any insulation tape and tubing from the section of the harness with the fusible links you need to repair.
- 3). Locate the feeding wire connected to the three fusible links leading to the three different circuits.
- 4). Cut the blown fusible link close to the weld at the feeding wire, cut the other end at the splice and throw away the link. Use a pair of diagonal cutting pliers.
- 5). Cut the remaining two good fusible links close to the weld at the feeding wire using the pair of diagonal cutting pliers.
- 6). Strip 1/2-inch (13 mm) of insulation from the two good fusible links at the end you separated from the feeding wire using a wire stripper.
- 7). Strip 1/2-inch (13 mm) of insulation from one end of the new fusible link you want to install using the wire stripper.
- 8). Insert the stripped ends of the two good fusible links and the new fusible link into one side of a non-insulated butt connector of the appropriate size.
- 9). Crimp the all three wires firmly together with a crimp tool.

Cut the piece of weld from the feed wire using the pair of diagonal cutting pliers. - 11
Strip 1/2-inch (13 mm) of insulation from the feeding wire using the wire stripper. - 12
Insert the end of stripped feed wire into the other end of the non-insulated butt connector and crimp that end of the butt connector with the crimp tool. - 13
Strip 1/2-inch (13 mm) of insulation from the other end of the new fusible link using the wire stripper. - 14
Cut the splice from the wire you need to attach the new fusible link to using the pair of diagonal cutting pliers. - 15
Strip 1/2-inch (13 mm) of insulation from the end of the wire you need to attach the new fusible link to using the wire stripper. - 16
Insert the stripped end of the new fusible-link into one side of a non-insulated butt connector of the appropriate size and crimp that side of the butt connector with the crimp tool. - 17
Insert the stripped end of the wire you need to connect into the other end of the non-insulated butt connector and crimp that side of the butt connector with the crimp tool. - 18
Solder the connections at each end of both non-insulated butt connectors using a soldering gun and rosin core solder with 60 percent tin and 40 percent lead. - 19
Insulate each of the butt connectors with electrical tape and wrap a piece of wire harness insulation tubing around the section of the circuit with the fusible links, if necessary. - 20
