On Michelle Obama - America's First Black Lady

I've been intrigued watching the unfolding development of Mrs O's place on the global fashion grid, starting from an unassuming back row and shooting to pole position in impressive record time!
So impressed am I that I've dedicated my current spring/summer collection to her.

She has been a great demonstrator of the KIS (keep it simple) less is more, philosophy, showing that the technique works well. For her early laps on the campaign trail she deftly added beautiful
broaches giving underplayed suits a new feminine lease, enough to be noticed but not to distract attention away from the main player. Her use of colour in those jewel satin chemise tops is pleasing on the eye.
She does colour well with those honey skin tones.

However, she's now placed in the unenviable position of having to try and gauge the spectrum right, too simple and the cry will come she's too banal, to high at the other end and the howl will be, over the top!……..

Naturally, there will always be someone who doesn't like something; I see everyone's rushing to comment on how they'd dress her but who's taking into account that we have a very different body shape about to inhabit the Whitehouse? Indeed I have seen the emergence of totally new body shapes as the world's races become more mixed.

As a British born black fashion designer/couturier, during the 10 years located in my Mayfair salon off New Bond Street I've noted the changes in attitudes of some of my clients on both sides of the mixed clientele base who beat a path to my door.

Some of my afri/carribean clients presented a compulsion to cover their booty's so much I had to often counsel them out of opting sometimes for unnecessary longer jackets or over baggy dresses. Their discovery that they could indeed have styles cut with their body shape taken into consideration gave them a great fit and a new confidence as ready to wear garments are usually not designed or cut with this body shape in mind. It transpired that this insecurity for the 'booty' covering was born from them constantly hearing that well worn British phrase 'does my bum look too big in this?' so what if it does said I, it's your heritage! And yes, you can get jeans made too that don't gape at the back waist like a builder's cleavage.

I promptly designed a range of items to add to my collection with these clients in mind and called that section, 'does my bum look big ENOUGH in this?' Thus I became known for my 'exit' detail. Hmmnn…..

Yes, I became quite familiar with the former phrase but have seen it interestingly demise considerably as thankfully women like Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce so comfortable in their own skins showed us it's ok.

One of the fastest growing plastic surgery operations over the past few years has been' booty' implants, would you believe it, it's gone full circle and everyone wants one now!

My clients are showing a keen interest in what Mrs O is either wearing or going to wear and a pinstripe fitted day/reception dress I've designed with Mrs O in mind, complete with a neat exit detail, has already become a top seller so my current spring/summer collection has been inspired by and dedicated to her and allows me to show how I would dress her, exit detail and all.
