How to Hire Private Investigator

    • 1). Determine what type of investigation you will be asking your private investigator to do for you. People hire private investigators for all sorts of different things. You may need a private investigator to look into someone's criminal past, help you with a divorce or child custody argument or help find a lost person among other things. Many private investigators specialize in certain areas.

    • 2). Ask the private investigator to show you his license. There are many people doing the job of a P.I. without having a license. This is one person you want to ensure is properly licensed. They will have had to pass certain tests, background checks and even be bonded among other things in order to obtain their private investigator license. Having a license also makes them easier to look into if you want to ensure there have been no large complaints made against them or their business.

    • 3). Ensure that your private investigator is properly insured before you hire them. Should a claim arise due to an activity they took part in while investigating your case, such as damaging personal property, and aren't properly insured, it will become your financial burden as you are their employer.

    • 4). Get your agreement in writing before handing over any monies when you hire a private investigator. This will prevent any misunderstandings later and protect you legally should you need it.
