Guide Review -- Thermos Foogo Vacuum Insulated Leak-Proof Straw Bottle
I first purchased the Thermos Foogo Vacuum Insulated Leak-Proof Straw Bottle because I thought the straw design might be easier for my son to drink from than the stainless steel water bottle I had initially purchased for him. He refused to drink from it at first, and it did not appear to be easier for him to drink from once he started using it. He now alternates between the two water bottles without any particular preference between the two.
I never used a sippy cup with my son, so the interchangeable parts of the Thermos Phases cups was not a big selling point for me.
But I did like the pop-up straw and push-button lid because I thought it would help to keep the straw clean. My son is able to open and close the lid easily by himself, which does definitely help to keep the straw from getting dirty.
I also like that this bottle doesn't sweat at all, so you don't have to worry about it leaving water marks on your furniture and it doesn't feel cold to the touch when you put a cold liquid in it. I have found that this makes for a more pleasant drinking experience for my son compared with other stainless steel water bottles, since the stainless steel can sometimes get too cold for him to comfortably hold the water bottle if I put a cold drink in it.
As a busy mom, I also appreciate that I can just toss the water bottle onto the top shelf of the dishwasher. The bottle has always come out clean after dishwashing (although admittedly I only ever fill it with water, so it would be hard to tell if it wasn't clean). I also always take the time to take the bottle's top apart before placing it in the dishwasher, so it can be a little time-consuming to take it apart and put it together again after running it through the dishwasher.
The biggest concern that I have with this bottle, however, is the fragility of the multiple plastic parts. Our son has dropped the bottle multiple times and has sent the top of the lid flying off a few times. So far, I have been able to put the lid back together, but I do have a concern that after long-term use, one of the plastic hinge parts could break off the lid, making the top part unusable.
The other major drawbacks of this bottle are largely aesthetic. After more than a year of use, the plastic piece that sits on the bottom of the bottle has loosened to the point where it easily pops on and off. Additionally, the Foogo logo has partially worn off and the straw has taken on a somewhat cloudy appearance.
After less than 2 years of use, we retired this bottle because it was quite simply pathetic looking. The bottom was constantly falling off and the clear plastic pieces had become cloudy.
Despite the potential drawbacks of this bottle, I would recommend it if you are interested in a stainless steel water bottle with a straw or one that can keep drinks cold for extended periods of time. But beware that it may not last you very long.
