How to Get Kids Interested in Classic Books

    • 1). Introduce some of your favorite literary classics to the students and share the reasons you enjoy these stories and memories you have from reading them when you attended school. Plan a reading schedule for students and work with them to select classic works to read throughout the year.

    • 2). Develop a short script based on some classic novels, such as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" or "Little Women," and allow students to act out a mini-play based on the stories. The children will use their creativity to explore tales of human nature.

    • 3). Ask students to share some of their favorite books and movies and find a way to connect the current favorites to classics of the past. Find a way to compare the protagonist from a classic novel to a superhero or popular television character from today's pop culture. For instance, study "The Chronicles of Narnia" and discuss how the series relates to the Harry Potter books by using fantasy and magic to explore the theme of good vs. evil.

Set aside a time during the day to read a small portion of a classic novel to the class. You can read aloud to the children and stop periodically to discuss important themes or explain confusing material.

Before asking the children to read a classic novel, have a brief discussion about the setting of the story. Allow the children to find the story's locale on a map and show them pictures of houses, clothing and transportation from that time period.
