How to Find Unclaimed Money From the IRS

    • 1). Log on to the website maintained by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. The website address for the organization is Unclaimed.org.

    • 2). Click the state where you lived when you filed the missing tax return. If you lived in several states, click on each state one at a time. Clicking on a state will open a new window pointing to that state's unclaimed property department.

    • 3). Enter your last name into the search box and click "Submit." Only your last name is required, but entering at least a few letters of your first name will make your results more accurate. Also search using your maiden name, and any other names you used when filing your tax returns over the years.

    • 4). Click the link next to your name to access the claim form for your missing tax return. Read the instructions on the form carefully, since each state uses different techniques to determine eligibility and verify claims.
