Don"t Miss these Nebraska Summer Events



If you are looking for something to do in Nebraska this summer, you can find it at one of the state’s fairs or festivals. Nebraska offers a unique array of options, from a celebration of Czech heritage to a salute to chickens to commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. And, of course, there’ll be plenty of rodeos and livestock judging to attend in between.

1. Juneteenth
Mayhew Cabin is Nebraska’s first national recognized underground railroad site.

This historic museum celebrates the end of American slavery every June 21st with a big celebration. Living history demonstrations, Civil War reenactments and guest lecturers are just some of the things happening at this event. Admission is free, but a donation is suggested.

2. Big Bang Boom
Big Bang Boom is a display of sights and sounds that has been celebrating the country’s birthday for nearly 40 years. The day starts with Boomfest, a fair filled with family activities, food and vendors. Then, a spectacular fireworks show set to music will be synchronized over Skyview Lake.

3. Madison County Fair and Rodeo
The fairgrounds in Madison County are transformed into a mecca of fun for five days each July. One of the highlights is a rodeo each night. They’ll also have carnival rides and exhibits will be available throughout. Musical acts, including Brett Eldredge and Larry Gatlin, will be performing on the weekend.

4. The Wayne Chicken Show
The Wayne Chamber of Commerce has certainly come up with something truly unique for a summer celebration. The annual chicken-themed show includes a National Cluck-Off, the World’s Largest Chicken Dance, games, fireworks, an omelet feed, and unspecified entertainment.

5. Gage County Fair and Expo
The Gage County Fair and Expo has been taking place for 100 years. The four day event is filled with everything from livestock judging to craft exhibits. You’ll also find some top musical acts, like Granger Smith and Eve of Destruction, along with stock car races and the Nebraska Sprint Car Classic here.

6. Wilber Czech Festival
Wilber, Nebraska, is known for its large Czech population and they put on a big celebration of their heritage each August. The party is spread out at locations throughout the city and includes authentic Czech music, dancing, food and costumes. Three parades take place during the festival as well as contests.

7. Omaha Crush
Formerly known as The Riverfront Wine Festival, the Omaha Crush is a downtown celebration of wine, art and food. Wines from around the world will be available for sampling along with culinary creations from some of the top chefs in Omaha. One price includes food and drink for the day.

8. Nebraska State Fair
State fairs always include the most activity and the Nebraska State Fair is no different. For 11 days at the end of the summer, this event will continue a tradition that’s nearly 150 years old. You’ll find livestock, horses, motorsports, an antique farm machinery display and a Department of Agriculture Exhibit in Grand Island. Concerts will include Chris Young and Styx.
