How to Determine What Updo Is Best for Your Wedding Day

    • 1). Decide on a veil. Your veil is an important component in your wedding day hairstyle, as you will need to decide whether you want a stunning hairstyle or one that simply supports the veil. If you are intending to leave your veil on for the whole day, opt for a sturdy updo like a French twist. However, if you're intending to remove your veil after the ceremony, an ornate hairstyle complete with delicate coils and pearl-headed pins will be better suited.

    • 2). Take your gown into consideration. Your gown's neckline can have a huge impact on the best hairstyle for your day, as it's necessary to create balance between the two so that one doesn't outshine the other. If your gown has a high neckline, try a high bun or a braided updo. For eclectic, unstructured styles, try a loose chignon or a braided halo (also called braided headband). For one-shouldered gowns, anchor your hairstyle on the opposite side of the shoulder strap to create balance.

    • 3). Consider your wedding day style. If your day is going to be a formal occasion, a structured or curled bun will lend itself well to your day. However, if you are having an informal celebration, a low knot or a runway-inspired side braid will add a sense of freedom to your wedding.

    • 4). Look through bridal magazines and take note of the styles which you find inspiring. Weed out the looks which will clash with your veil or gown and the styles which don't suit your hair type because of length or texture. Keep photos of the remaining styles to show your hairstylist when it comes time to test out wedding day looks.

    • 5). Try several styles yourself. This is particularly necessary if you are intending to style your hair yourself on your wedding day, as you need to know which styles you are capable of creating and which ones you aren't. Additionally, this gives you an opportunity to decide which styles suit your face shape, veil and gown style. Try your chosen style at least three times before your wedding day to ensure that you are comfortable recreating it later.
