Architectural drafting: What kinds of plans and drawings are included under it?

The entire concept of architectural drafting has gone under tremendous change with the adoption of cutting edge tools and technology by design and construction professionals. Architects and engineers, used to be masters in developing drawings for building construction a few decades earlier but all of that has changed now with the acceptance of computer aided-design technology which optimizes computer systems to generate architectural and engineering drawings.

CAD technology has made tremendous difference in the way architects as well as engineersĀ  used to function in Architecture, Engineering and construction Industry, one of their main task used to be the development of construction drawings and documents which used to be provided to all the key building stakeholders for understanding construction. But with the passage of time all that has changed, and today neither architects nor engineers are fully involved into the development of construction drawings. Manual drafting has been successfully replaced by digital drafting wherein CAD technicians play a major role in the creation of construction drawings.

Now, let's discuss about architectural drafting and the prominent changes that have been experienced by AEC professionals over the years in their development. Toady all kinds of construction drawings including architectural drawings are developed inside the high-tech offices of engineering outsourcing companies which are equipped with sophisticated software products such as AutoCAD. That means instead of architects, CAD technicians are responsible for creating architectural drawings such as site plans, floor plans, sections and elevations etc. by utilizing CAD software. But it needs to be clear to readers that CAD technicians cannot develop the drawings without the support of blueprints and specifications created by architects which are provided to them well in advance when they execute CAD drafting services. The fact is that even though architects create the entire architectural design, they no more indulge into drawing development which is wholeheartedly served by competent technicians.

On the basis of the specifications developed by architects, CAD drafters develop detailed drawings and plans for architectural construction. Be it the site plans, floor plans or sections etc. all of them are developed in details so that when construction professionals refer them they can form a clear understanding about architectural design. Site plans incorporate detailed data about the location in which the proposed building is about to be constructed, it also provides details about roads connecting to the building, parking space, boundary wall etc. Similarly entire floor details are provided into floor plans created by CAD technicians in AutoCAD.
