How to Reduce Ascites

    • 1). Consult a nutritionist. If ascites is a result of liver cirrhosis or heart disease, changes in your diet may be required. Ask about how much sodium you should be consuming per day. Accordingly, reduce the amount of salt you use while cooking. Follow the nutritionist's guidance concerning foods to avoid. Generally, processed, prepared or pre-packaged foods are high in salt content.

    • 2). Prevent liver damage. Make sure you're not further burdening your liver. Do not consume products that contain alcohol. Speak to your doctor about any medication you're taking that might aggravate liver functions.

    • 3). Make sure you understand the correct manner of taking medication prescribed by your doctor. Take medicines at the stipulated times. In case of discomfort, consult your doctor to determine if medication should be changed. Never make an unassisted decision to stop, reduce or increase doses. Consult your doctor before taking over-the-counter medication.

    • 4). Monitor the condition regularly. Get tests done in accordance with your doctor's instructions. These tests will help your doctor evaluate the effectiveness of your medication. Don't try to analyze the test results. Meet with your doctor to learn more. Repeat the tests at the intervals advised by your doctor.

    • 5). Avoid self-medication with herbal products or health supplements. Such products could interfere with your prescribed medications.

    • 6). Report to you doctor any swelling, change in body weight or alteration in frequency of urination. Each of those symptoms could indicate a need for other measures to control ascites.
