the song was written in Massachusetts by James Lord Pierpont in 1850, and referred to the autumn sleigh races popular during the time.
And here's another interesting tidbit... "Jingle Bells" was the first song broadcast from space. While in space in 1965, American astronauts sent a report to Mission Control of "an object... I see a command module and eight smaller modules in front. The pilot of the command module is wearing a red suit." These astronauts then used a harmonica and sleigh bells to perform a version of "Jingle Bells".
