What Do You Need to Change Your Name After Marriage?
- The first step in the process is changing your social security information. To do so, visit your local social security office and provide evidence of age with a birth certificate, passport or final adoption decree. Also, provide a certified copy of your marriage certificate, and fill out an application for a new card, which can be found at the linked social security website in Resources.
- Stop by your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to get your new driver's license or identification card. Most locations will only require that you bring your certified marriage license, but some will also require that you provide your new social security card. Call ahead to check specific requirements for your DMV.
- Change your name at your bank, on your passport if applicable, your mortgage and your voter registration. Call various organizations to complete these steps, or you can purchase a name-change kit, which includes all of the necessary forms and a handy checklist to make sure you don't forget anything. Some kit services are linked in the Resources section. Also, contact your employer about the name change.
