How to Use a Wood Router Table

    • 1). Check that the router table and router base is flat. Place a long straight edge across the router table and router base plate. Look to see if there are any gaps between the router plate and the router table. Adjust the router plate up or down for a perfectly flat surface. Refer to your owner's manual for specific instructions for adjusting the plate.

    • 2). Install the router bit you want to use for your project. Adjust the router for the correct height of the bit. Select the correct router plate ring to fit as tight over the router bit as possible without touching the bit. This helps to keep the wood from chipping and increases dust control.

    • 3). Adjust the router fence so that the fence is even with the outside edge of the router bit bearing. Use a straight edge for this. This ensures that the router will cut the correct profile and not gouge the wood.

    • 4). Adjust the router fence so that it is as close to the router bit as possible so that the bit will not cut the fence when it is used. Most store-bought router fences come with a two-piece fence system for this adjustment. Refer to the manual for specific adjustment instructions.

    • 5). Connect the dust collection system to the dust port on the back of the router fence. This will remove the majority of the dust and debris as you router for a cleaner and a safer cut.

    • 6). Feed the wood using push blocks and hold down pads to hold smaller pieces of wood. These give you more control and make the cuts a lot safer my keeping your fingers away from the cutter.

    • 7). Hold your work tight against the fence and table with feather boards for long pieces of wood. A feather board keeps a constant one-way pressure on the wood as it is fed through the router table. This prevents kickbacks and keeps your fingers away from the cutter.
