6 Tips To Build Self Confidence
When I was 23 I moved from a small town in Pennsylvania to Orange County California, my first job was at a health club passing out FREE passes to the club, for the life of me I could not muster enough courage to do such a simple thing like passing out something FREE.
As fate would have it, my next job was, believe it or not, selling coupon books business to business and house to house, no too bad of a job unless of course you are terrified of speaking to strangers.
The reason I share this with you is because it's important for you to understand I know the feeling of having no self confidence, I also know you can over come it.
The 10 tips I will share with you helped me to build my confidence and a direct sales company selling $15 million dollars of products door to door.
Tip #1: Educate - The internet, bookstores and the library are loaded with tapes, books and videos that will help you build your knowledge on any subject, this tip changed my entire life, not going to college I felt I was at a disadvantage until I listened to my first tape program.
The Psychology of Winning by Dennis Waitley since then I can't seem to find enough hours in the day to read and listen to educational material.
Tip # 2: Self Talk - 75% of the conversations we have with ourselves is negative, "you're not smart enough", "you're too short", "you're too old".
If you're a human you know what I'm talking about, the trick is to stop or at the very least cut way down on the amount of negative self talk.
The key is to be conscious of your self talk and then correct it when you hear going on a negative rant.
Tip # 3: Remove the Negatives - Unfortunately we all have them somewhere in our life, either at work or in our family, I'm referring to negative people that never have anything nice to say to or about us.
You need to remove them from your life (as long as you're not married to them, on second thought...
) or remove yourself from that environment.
Tip # 4: Stand Up Straight - If you look at sad people, depressed people or people with low self confidence, what do they all have in common? They all walk with their head down and slouching somewhat.
This is a physical thing that has a definite effect on your state of mind.
If you look at confident, happy and fired up people, what do they all have in common? You got it, they walk with their head up and back straight, you can feel the difference immediately when you walk straight up.
If you don't believe me, stand up right now back straight and look straight ahead - you can feel and so will everyone else who comes in contact with you.
Tip # 5: Fake-It-'Til-You-Make-It - I know you've heard this term before; I can't even remember how many times I had to fake being confident right before I would enter an office building to sell my coupon books.
All I know is that it works and it works every time you do it, I used to pretend I was the landlord going in to collect the rent check; I was never arrogant, just confident.
We can all learn a great lesson from our children about pretending, they take it down to the last detail and they are believeable..
Tip # 6: Be Responsible - Once you are able to take responsibility for the mistakes as well as the things you get right, you will have won a huge battle in the quest for self confidence.
Everytime you make a mistake and then an excuse for the mistake, you deep down know the truth, by denying it you feel guilty which works on your feelings of not being good enough and then the negative self talks begins and you're in a terrible cycle.
Fess up, take responsibility, fix it if it needs to be fixed and then MOVE ON & FORGET IT!
