The needs and interests of a 13-year-old girl may be many and diverse. When you are choosing a birthday gift for a young teen, keep in mind that not every teenage girl has the same interests. Ask her parents about what types of activities she enjoys and about any experiences she might enjoy that she hasn't had the opportunity to try yet. You can introduce her to something new to help expand her horizons and interests. - When a girl turns 13, she is either just entering high school or will be entering high school shortly. She will enter a world where her interests will probably shift towards fashion, dating and other social activities. Get her a subscription for a magazine that supports her interests or that is directed at girls her age. These include magazines about fashion trends, dating, social mores and etiquette. If she has a special hobby or interest, such as riding horses or sewing, buy her a subscription for a magazine centered around that hobby.
- Keeping in touch when they're on the move is important for teenage girls. If she doesn't already have one, buy her a cell phone with text messaging so she can communicate with her friends while she is away from home. If she is a fan of music, an MP3 player will let her carry her favorite music with her wherever she goes. Buy her a digital camera or digital video camera to help her record outings and parties with friends.
- Buy a gift certificate so the birthday girl and a few friends can enjoy a dining experience that is both a meal and entertainment. At a fondue restaurant, she and her friends can prepare their own food while they socialize. At a Japanese steakhouse, they can watch as their food is prepared table-side. Or buy her tickets to a local dinner theater, where she can enjoy both a meal and a performance with her friends.
- If your teen is into playing tennis, biking or swimming, give her a gym membership so she can work out even when the weather does not permit outdoor activities. Working out at a gym can also prepare her if she is interested in playing sports in high school.
- Being a teenager can be filled with stressful activities and decisions. Help her relax by making an appointment for her at a spa. Let her choose the service she'd like to receive, whether it's a massage, pedicure or manicure.
