How to Make a Floating Thermometer
- 1). Light the candle, and hold the head side of the nail with your rag. Hold the end of the nail over the flame for one minute until hot. Push nail through the lid. Repeat until the straw can fit through the hole.
- 2). Insert the straw into the lid so it will not touch the bottom of the can when closed. Seal the straw to the top of the lid with modeling clay.
- 3). Pour equal parts of tap water and rubbing alcohol into the film can up to 1/2-inch. Add two drops of food color.
- 4). Replace the lid on the film canister.
- 5). Use the scissors to cut half-inch slits inwards from each corner of the note card. Fold up the sides of the card, creating a box.
- 6). Tape each corner of the folded up note card so it will remain buoyant when placed in water.
- 7). Fill your kitchen or bathroom sink with hot water. Place the sealed film canister in the note card "boat" in your sink.
