How to Make a Recliner Slipcover

    • 1). Measure your recliner with the tape measure to get the exact measurements. Make sure to cover every angle, the front and back, the sides and any awkward curves. Having precise measurements is very important to covering furniture.

    • 2). Decide what type of fabric you want for the recliner's slipcover, as there are many different styles and colors. Lay the fabric out on the floor by the recliner. It is best to invest in at least double the amount of slipcover fabric you need in order to use it for mistakes or cushions, if necessary.

    • 3). Drape the slipcover fabric over the recliner and pin it around the angles to reaffirm the measurements. You can do this in steps (for example, the back of the couch, the top of the chair), and it is OK if the fabric is a little loose. Allow for about a 1-inch hem on all furniture.

    • 4). Remove the slipcover fabric off the recliner. Use the sewing machine to secure the hems in the location of the pins. Carefully, remove the pins one at a time during the process to make sure that you are correctly working the angles.

    • 5). Fit the slipcover over the recliner multiple times while you are sewing the hems shut. This is to ensure that it fits. Of course, especially if this is your first time making a slipcover, you will most likely need to make numerous minor adjustments. Once the sewing machine work is all done, fit the slipcover over the recliner. Tuck under stray edges of fabric and use a needle and thread to secure them in place.
