- The current incarnation of the Chicago Jazz Festival began after the city of Chicago decided to combine yearly tribute concerts to Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and the Chicago Jazz Institute's summer celebration into one event.
- In 2010, the Chicago Jazz Festival is spread across three performance areas linked by public transportation on the lakefront: Millennium Park, the Chicago Cultural Center and Grant Park. Admission is free, as sponsors and the city of Chicago want to keep the festival open to all who want to listen.
- The Chicago Jazz Festival has featured well-known performers such as Dave Holland, Kurt Elling and Ernie Watts. There are also lesser-known student groups and rising acts.
