DIY Van Conversions
- 1). Park the van on a flat surface and open all of the doors and windows. Disconnect the battery.
- 2). Remove any seats with their brackets. Usually, this will require a wrench or socket wrench and screwdrivers.
- 3). Unroll the carpet and allow it to sit in the sun for a few hours to flatten out. Although the overall of the van's dimensions approximate the shape of the carpet, there are a few notches that may require some trimming of the carpet.
- 4). Test the shape of the carpet. If there are lumps or corners that require trimming, cut the carpet on the spot. Cut the holes where the back seats were; this is where the sofa couch will be located later.
- 5). Cut out wheel-well intrusions.
- 6). Remove the carpet and flip it over. Clean off any dirt or carpet fibers, paying special attention to the sides, as that is where the Velcro will adhere to.
- 7). Clean the bare floor of the van. Remove anything from the inner sides that would impede adhesion of the Velcro.
- 8). Cut Velcro into four strips: two strips 47 inches long and two strips 80 inches long.
- 9). Lay strips on the floor of the van. The shorter strips should be at the farthest point of where the carpet ends near the back doors and just behind the front seats. The side strips can lay on the floor along the edge of the wheel wells. Place any leftover Velcro aft of the wheel wells or in the middle of the floor.
- 10
Lay the carpet upon the exposed strip's adhesive and press firmly in place. - 11
Place the self-contained kitchen unit ahead of the driver's side rear wheel well. This will place the majority of the weight ahead of the rear axle. Follow the unit's mounting directions. If mounting the kitchen unit requires adding brackets to the floor, cut the carpet and remove the excess before adding the mounting bracket. - 12
Mount the brackets and frame for the sofa bench seat unit. Usually, this will mount directly to the old bracket mounts. Follow all mounting directions of the unit and test-fold the unit to verify clearance of the doors and appliances. - 13
Place a large, plastic container behind the front passenger seat. Add the generator and extension cords to the box. Secure it with bungee cords behind the front passenger seat. - 14
Reconnect the battery.
