How to Install a Pet Door or Dog Door

    • 1). Tape the pet door mounting template (included with the pet door) to the desired location on your home's entry door using masking tape. Trace the outline of the door cutout and the mounting screw locations with a pencil. Remove the template from the door.

    • 2). Insert a 1/2 inch drill bit into a power drill. Drill holes all the way through the thickness of the door at all four corners of the traced outline of the pet door opening. Insert a 5/16 inch drill bit into the drill and bore through the thickness of the door on the pencil marks for the screw hole locations.

    • 3). Insert the blade of a jig saw into one of the 1/2 inch corner holes. Turn the saw on and cut along the pencil line to the next 1/2 inch corner hole. Continue cutting until all four 1/2 inch corner holes have been connected. Turn the saw off and remove it from the door. Remove the center of the cut out opening of the door and discard it.

    • 4). Push the outer pet door frame (without the flap) into the exterior of the door in the opening cut out in Step 3. Make sure the frame sits flush on the exterior door surface. Secure the frame temporarily with masking tape.

    • 5). Push the inner pet door frame (with the flap) into the interior of the door in the opening cut out in Step 3. Make sure the binder posts in the inner frame mesh with the holes in the outer frame. Secure the two halves of the pet door frame by pushing screws into the mounting holes on the inside frame and tighten them with a Philips screwdriver. Do not over-tighten the screws or the frame could warp or crack. Remove the tape from the outside pet door frame.
