Risks of High Blood Pressure

    Artery Damage

    • High blood pressure can damage the lining of the arteries. This damage causes the walls of the arteries to become stiff and thick. The damaged cells in the arteries collect the the fats from the diet and start to collect the fat. Damage to one section of arteries will causes damage to the other arteries in the body. This is because the undamaged arteries will have to work harder than before. This damage can lead to several serious health complications including heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and chest pain.

    Brain Damage

    • Your brain depends on a steady supply of blood to function properly. High blood pressure can cause an interruption in this supply and cause several problems. A Transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a mini-stroke can occur. A mini-stroke is a short disruption in the blood supply going to the brain. The most common reason this occurs is due to a blood clot, which can occur from high blood pressure. When a mini-stroke occurs, it is a warning that you are at a great risk for a stroke.

    Kidney Damage

    • Your kidneys are responsible for removing waste and excess fluid from your blood. For the kidneys to function properly, healthy blood vessels must be present. High blood pressure can cause damage to the blood vessels surrounding and leading into your kidneys. This can lead to kidney disease, kidney scarring, and even kidney failure. In addition, a kidney artery aneurysm may also occur. An aneurysm is an enlarged area in a blood vessel. This bulge in the blood vessel of the kidney can enlarge over time and may eventually rupture causing life-threatening internal bleeding.

    Damage to Your Eyes

    • The tiny blood vessels in your eyes can be damaged by high blood pressure. Damage can occur to the retina due to a lack of blood flow. If the blood vessels surrounding the retina become too damaged they may leak or become blocked. In extreme cases, this can lead to bleeding of the eye, blurred vision and a total loss of vision. The risk factors are compounded if both diabetes and high blood pressure are present.

    Other Possible Dangers

    • High blood pressure can affect all areas of the body. The likelihood of developing erectile dysfunction in increased with the presence of high blood pressure in the body. Bone loss can occur because people with high blood pressure excrete more calcium in their urine than others. This can lead to osteoporosis, which is a loss in bone density.

High blood pressure can also cause troubles with sleep. The most common condition caused by high blood pressure is called sleep apnea, which is when a person snores very loudly during sleep. Sleep deprivation can occur because of difficulty sleeping due to sleep apnea.
