When Does a Redbud Tree Bloom?

    Flowers

    • The buds of the redbud are reddish-purple, opening to delicate rosy pink (occasionally white) blossoms which appear in clusters in the spring.

    Bloom Time

    • A redbud blooms anywhere between March (in the southern end of its range) to May (in the northern end of its range). After two or three weeks of flowering, the blossoms fall and the redbud's leaves begin to appear.

    Range

    • The redbud is native to the eastern half of the United States, from southern Michigan south to central Texas, and from New Jersey west to Nebraska, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

    Size

    • The redbud reaches a height of 20 to 30 feet, and a width of 25 to 35 feet. It may grow as a single-stemmed tree or as a large multi-stemmed shrub.

    Why It's Unique

    • The redbud is valued as an ornamental for its horizontal branches, large heart-shaped leaves, lovely fall color, and for the flowers which bloom even before the leaves of other trees have formed.
