Choose a murder mystery party game from the many manufacturers who produce them. Generally speaking, these games will have rules, a plot and characters. Which game you choose will depend in part on the number of guests who will attend your party, so you will want the number of guests to work with the number of characters and the plot laid out by the game.

Choose the location for your mystery party game. Again, this choice will in part be affected by the number of guests that will take part. You will also want to, if possible, choose a location in keeping with the spirit of the day. For example, if the game is written to take place in a manor house, holding it in your condominium might take something away from the fun.

Select which of your guests will play which characters. It is usually best if the host plays the lead detective in the mystery, since he or she will best understand the plot itself. Other choices for roles can be based on criteria like the personalities of the people you invite and the gender of the character. For those who might have larger roles in the game, make sure you choose people comfortable with assuming center stage.

Decide whether you want the guests to arrive in costume for the party. If you do, you should make an effort to help them find appropriate costumes, either from local costume shops or from thrift stores. Send out invitations early asking for RSVPs so that you have time to select someone else to play particular characters should your first choice be unable to attend.

Send each confirmed guest a copy of the basic rules of the game as well as a card or booklet describing the character that he will play. His character description should be extensive. If the character card or booklet that comes with the game is a little brief, you can add more details.

Clear out any unnecessary items from the rooms where the party will take place. What you are creating is essentially a set or a stage, just like for a play or a movie. You want to achieve a safe environment in which a character can fall to the floor without necessarily being injured.
