Salary of a Fashion Editor
- A fashion editor is responsible for putting together outfits for print publications, interviewing fashion designers, and writing and editing fashion-related articles. She will communicate with Public Relations firms to ensure that her articles get published, interview designers and travel the world to attend fashion shows. Each season, a fashion editor must review designers' lookbooks, note pages that look interesting and catalog the lookbooks so the images can be used as inspiration for future articles.
- A fashion editor can plan to enter the industry with a salary of between $30,000 and $40,000 per year. However, some publications will pay entry-level assistant fashion editors even less: $20,000 a year or below. Additionally, internships, which help beginning fashion editors obtain full-time positions, are often unpaid. At this level, a fashion editor can expect to make sure that clothing in the storeroom is in good condition, answer the phone and open mail.
- An experienced fashion editor can expect to make between $40,000 to $60,000 a year, but this can progress to $100,000 for a top-level employee. At this point, the fashion editor can expect to take on more glamorous and demanding tasks, like networking with designers and attending fashion shows.
- One must have a Liberal Arts degree to become a fashion editor. A specialized degree in Fashion Design & Merchandising or Journalism is a plus. Fashion industry internships and experience are beneficial, as is a portfolio of published writing samples.
