PlayStation For Kids - Should You Buy Your Kids A PlayStation?

If you are a parent and have kids then you are undoubtedly familiar with the "must have" item for all kids these days, the Sony PlayStation.
Like me you probably have he fear of raising coach potatoes that will just sit and play video games all day.
Back when I was a kid we played outside and being stuck indoors was not only boring but something that we hated.
With video games, the real danger is that your kids will miss out on a lot of physical development that comes from the physical activity of playing.
When kids play the develop much more than mere physical ability.
They develop social skills which is one of my main concerns with getting them hooked on video games.
Although gaming has evolved and there is a level of interaction, its still keeps the child locked up in his own little world.
There is an argument that kids learn completely different skills when playing video games.
Hand-eye coordination, motor skills and general technical knowledge are certainly good points but these are definitely not the only or the best way to acquire these skills.
Some argue that with some of the latest technology that games will become more physical and much more interactive which holds great promise.
Then there is the issue of the content of games.
Its estimated that the average 14 year old has already seen more than 1000 simulated murders on TV.
A large percentage of video games are just plain violent and some of them are just plain gruesome.
I definitely do not want my kids to be exposed to that and even though its "simulated" scientific studies has show that this has a very detrimental effect to s child's perception of life.
The dilemma is that kids want to fit in and they want what their friends have.
Can you really deprive your child of this? Can you say no and let them be the odd ones out? For the time being I will disagree with video games and that PlayStation will have to wait for next Christmas.
Its probably inevitable that kids will want to play what their friends are playing.
The real secret is in setting some very firm ground rules right from the start - rules that will determine not only what they play but also how much they play.
Laying down the law from day one is important and with proper rules it can work well and help achieve that balance that most parents want for their kids.
