How to Prevent Urinary Tract Infection UTI's in Toddlers
- 1
Proper cleaning goes a long way in preventing Urinary Tract Infections. If your child is potty trained make sure they know to wipe from front to back. Until you are sure they are doing it well you do the "mom" check for her, if she does great praise her, if more training is need it, this will be a great time to do so. - 2). If your child is still in diapers, make sure to change diaper right away when the child goes BM, then you do the proper cleaning. If it is a messy diaper, wipe the baby as clean as you can get her, sometimes the BM will go into places you just can't reach due to sensitive areas. When this happens you can do two things, take the child for a quick bath or diaper the child and wait until she pees. Once the child has peed in the new diaper change it, it will have BM residue and you don't want to wait to change that.
- 3). It is always best to use the best diaper you can afford. Brand name diapers like Pampers, luvs or huggies are great. What you are looking in a diaper is how well they absorb, cheaper diapers tend to not do so well in that department and you child may develop diaper rash and Uti's. If you are strap for cash I would suggest Luvs, they are not highly expensive like pampers but they do a good job at keeping the baby dry.
- 4). Avoid bubble baths, the liquid bubble has fragrance and chemicals that can cause irritation and Urinary tract infections, if your child enjoys bubble baths, use it as a reward she can have once a week or so.
- 5). After the bath, if you enjoy putting baby powder on your child avoid the pubic area, powder or talc has fragrance that can find its way internally and cause problems. Use a child's diaper rash cream before you put a diaper on.
