How to Make a Wooden Car With Golf Ball Wheels

    Build the Car Components

    • 1). Drill the golf balls. Secure a ball in the vise tightly so it does not move, but not so tightly to bruise the outside of the ball. Using the 1/4-inch bit, drill 1/2 inch to 1 inch depth into the ball and remove any residue. Test the hole by inserting the 1/4 inch dowel; it should fit snugly. Repeat the process four times with each golf ball to prepare each "wheel."

    • 2). Make your car axles. Cut the dowel in half to make two 6-inch lengths. Put a few drops of glue into the golf ball's hole, then put one of the dowel ends into the ball and let it dry. Repeat the process on the other dowel. You should have two golf ball-dowel combinations that look like lollipops. Make sure that you leave enough dowel to pass through the body of the car and have enough to be glued into another ball on the other side of the car later in the process.

    • 3). Cut and shape the car. Using the block of wood and the jigsaw or coping saw, cut and shape the car to the style and type of your choosing. Once you have a shape to your liking, drill two holes all the way through the car using the 3/8-inch bit. The block of wood should be approximately 4 inches tall, 5 inches wide and 6 inches deep to avoid putting too much pressure on the dowel axle.

    Construction and Finishing

    • 1). Take one of the glued golf ball lollipop axles and insert it into one of the 3/8-inch drilled holes in the car. Put a few drops of glue into one of the two remaining golf balls and insert the dowel axle into the ball, and let it dry. Repeat the process for the other axle. Your two axles should spin as you move the car back and forth once the glue dries.

    • 2). Paint and finish the car to your liking. There are many different ways to finish the car depending on the style of car you want. One option to give the car a retro look is to paint a thick black stripe around the golf ball. This will make the tire look like a whitewall.

    • 3). Test the car out and make changes where necessary. Kids have a tendency to want things a certain way, so what your idea of a cool car might not be what the child had in mind. Make sure that your wheels spin back and forth with a little pressure, and make any requested changes that the child wants, like a racing stripe or a number on the door to make it look like a race car.
