How to Identify a Blue Button Jellyfish
- 1). Look for blue button jellyfish throughout the world. In the United States, they are especially prevalent off the coast of Florida. You may find large groupings of blue button jellyfish washed ashore on beaches.
- 2). Estimate the size of a blue button jellyfish. These creatures have a very small size. They range in size from 1 to 1 ? inches in diameter. Because of their small size, you may have difficulty spotting these creatures unless you see them in a large grouping.
- 3). Observe the appearance of the blue button jellyfish. Blue button jellyfish, unlike true jellyfish, consist of many small creatures or hydroids. The central portion of a blue button jellyfish has a hard texture and can have a dark blue, turquoise, golden or brown coloring. The "tentacles" of the blue button jellyfish are usually colored a bright turquoise. Sometimes, they may appear yellow in color, however.
- 4). Familiarize yourself with some of the behaviors of blue button jellyfish. Unlike most jellyfish, blue button jellyfish do not sting. However, they can irritate human skin when touched. They typically float through the ocean using both ocean currents and wind to help them move. They usually travel in large groups, and you can sometimes find large groups of beached blue button jellyfish.
