How to Grow an Avocado Tree That Will Bear Fruit

    • 1). Plant avocado trees in full sun. Avocado trees will grow in shade but, according to the California Rare Fruit Growers website, will produce fruit only in full sun. Allow 20 feet between other trees, buildings and power lines. Choose a location with good drainage and loose, sandy loam soil.

    • 2). Water avocado trees during dry spells. If the soil is dry at the bottom of a 9 inch deep hole, water is needed. Water deeply only as needed.

    • 3). Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer formula four times a year after the first year.

    • 4). Maintain a grass- and weed-free zone around the tree during the first 3 years after planting. Remove all vegetation and apply a layer of organic mulch under the drip line.

    • 5). Watch for iron deficiency indicated by yellow leaves. Apply a chelated-iron spray to correct the problem if it occurs.

    • 6). Cover young trees with blankets or rugs whenever a freeze is expected. Mature trees are more hardy than young trees and need less protection. Provide a wind break for young trees.

    • 7). Whitewash exposed branches and trunks of young trees to protect the tree from sun exposure. Paint exposed areas with a mixture of equal parts water and white latex paint.
