Regular Coffee Drinkers Have Less Risk of Heart Rhythm Disturbances
Once again coffee is taking the cake in the great health benefits that it provides! A recent study has shown that coffee drinkers are less likely to develop heart rhythm irregularities than those who don't regularly enjoy a cup of Joe.
Most recently, coffee has been praised for a wide range of health benefits, and the list seems to be getting longer and longer.
Within this study, the American Heart Association reported that drinking four or more cups of coffee on a daily basis reduced the risk for hospitalization caused by disturbances in the heart rhythm.
These regular coffee drinkers experienced a reduced risk of 18% compared to those who didn't regularly drink coffee.
Apparently, within this study, the more coffee drinking, the better because those who drank between 1 and 3 cups of coffee on a daily basis had a 7% reduction in their risk of hospitalization.
Of course, it is still important to drink coffee in moderation, especially since many people sensitive to caffeine can struggle with anxiety, jitteriness, and insomnia from the caffeine overload.
However, the results from this study are quite clear in that four or more cups of coffee consumed daily basis offer greater benefits than those who drank less coffee regularly.
The study observed over 100,000 women and men ranging from the ages of 18 to 90 years old.
The majority of the men and women within the study were younger than 50 years old, and 2% of the study participants were hospitalized for disturbances in heart rhythms.
50% of the study participants were hospitalized for atrial fibrillation, which is one of the most common issues in heart rhythms.
Those that saw the 18% reduction in their risk of hospitalization received those benefits regardless of their sex, ethnicity, and whether or not they were smokers.
14% of the participants in the study drank 1 cup of coffee on a daily basis, 42% consumed between 1 and 3 cups, and 17% drank more than 4 cups every day.
27% of the study participants abstained from coffee completely.
Overall, the study did not conclude that you should drink coffee to prevent heart rhythm issues, but it did offer the benefit that people at risk for problems with their heart rhythm do not have to abstain from coffee altogether because it can actually help.
The study did not show the cause and effect of coffee drinking on the heart rhythm, but it did underscore the fact that moderately enjoying coffee does not cause a disturbance in the heart rhythm whatsoever, but it seems to reduce the risk for hospitalization.
