Instructions for Raised Garden Beds
- 1). Measure the area where the beds will go, especially if you are using prefabricated kits or pre-cut lumber. Mark the corners with sticks. You may want to wind twine loosely between the sticks to get an idea of the amount of space that will be taken up by the bed. For multiple beds, make sure to leave a foot-wide path between each bed to allow easy access to each side of the beds.
- 2). Remove all unwanted turf, rocks and debris.
- 3). Frame out the area where you want the beds. If you are using a prefab kit, build it before continuing. If you're using stones, stack them to your desired height so they create a low wall that will make the perimeter. If you're using wood, join the pieces together with a hammer and nails or screws. Typically a wooden frame is square or rectangular, using four or eight 2-by-6 boards and 4-by-4s cut to 12 or 18 inches for corner pieces. Using the level, ensure that the frame is distributed evenly. If you're using rubber or vinyl strips, outline the area with the strips and secure them with clips or pegs.
- 4). Mix the soil with any amendments, such as compost or mulch, and fill the now framed bed to near the top.
- 5). Rake the soil level, water it, and let it settle.
- 6). Lay out and plant the flowers or vegetables and fruits you will grow in the beds, then water them in. Mulch if desired.
