Beldi

Definition:

Moroccans use the Arabic term beldi to denote something which is traditional, indigenous, or produced domestically or locally. The word is derived from bled, the word for country, territory, land or countryside.

Beldi is often used to differentiate things from those which are roumi (imported or of Western influence). The word is encountered frequently when talking about Moroccan cooking or ingredients.

Some examples:
  • djaj beldi - a free range chicken
  • bayd beldi - eggs from a free range chicken
  • meshmash beldi - a small, wild or indigenous apricot
  • zebda beldia - homemade or traditional Moroccan butter
  • citron beldi - indigenous lemons used to make preserved lemons
