Is Cholesterol Harmful?

    Cholesterol Benefits

    • Your body uses cholesterol to maintain healthy cell membranes, produce sex and steroid hormones and create bile acids which aid in fat digestion. Cholesterol is needed for brain function and is used to carry antioxidants and vitamins to the tissues.

    LDL Cholesterol

    • High levels of LDL cholesterol are harmful for your body. Excessive levels of LDL can cause a build-up of thick, hard plaque deposits on the inside of the blood vessel wall which can increase the risk of heart disease. Foods that contain saturated fats and transfatty acids raise LDL cholesterol levels in the blood.

    HDL Cholesterol

    • HDL cholesterol is good for the body and lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke. HDL cholesterol acts as a scavenger and grabs LDL cholesterol from the arteries, transferring it to the liver to remove it from the body.
