Can You Surf the Web on the iPod Touch?
- To get online with your iPod Touch, you need to be connected to a wireless Internet network. To find a list of wireless networks available to you, touch the "Settings" icon on the iPod Touch screen and select the "Wi-Fi" option. In the "Choose a Network" section, you can see a list of networks the iPod can pick up. Click on the network you want and enter a password if one is required to join. You are connected to the Internet when you see the signal monitor at the top-left side of the screen. Because iPods need a stronger Internet signal to use a wireless network, you may not be able to see all the networks that you can see from your computer; if this is the case, get closer to the wireless router.
- To surf the Web on an iPod Touch, use the device's built-in browser. The iPod Touch uses Safari, which comes standard on all Apple products. When you want to browse the Internet, click on the Safari icon, which looks like a compass. When the browser opens, touch the address bar at the top to enter the URL of the website you want to visit. To search, click on the search field on the top-right side of the page and type in your search term to search with Google.
- Occasionally, you need to join open networks that do not have password protection but require an additional step to connect to the Internet. Libraries, coffee shops and other public networks often have an authentication page where you must agree to the terms of service to connect. Usually, the page pops up automatically. If it does not, open Safari, which redirects to the page.
- For many of the things you normally do online, such as using social media sites or banking, you can download applications. An application eliminates the need to open a web browser; it takes you directly to an interface that is designed to work with the iPod Touch for a smoother experience. Applications are designed to work with the size of the iPod's screen so you can browse easily without needing to zoom in and out.
