New Ways to Teach Children With Autism

Sixty or more years ago, if you had a child who was autistic, you would likely end up thinking your child has mental problem and may put him/her in a mental institution and move on with your life. Doctors of the Randolph Based Autistic Center once said,€ There is no treatment for Autism, there is just isolation€. Unfortunately this attitude was carried on for a very long time.

Today, there are many treatment options; there are also many children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. One in 110 children is Autistic. ASD encompasses three conditions - autistic disorder, Asperger Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder - and all cause serious social, behavioral and communicational problems in kids and adults. However, a new autism definition will now see a drastic fall in the number of diagnoses as it excludes several symptoms.

In the late 1950's and 1960's tired and frustrated parents took up the challenge of home-schooling their autistic kids due to the lack of facilities or services available. However, today nearly more than two dozen schools in Massachusetts alone consist of a dedicated team of teachers and therapists to help an autistic child cope with the disorder in a more dignified way.

Most schools these days who teach Autistic children based on autism definition guidelines use a method called Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA). The idea behind ABA is changing the minds of the society towards autism.

Having to teach an autistic child can be a challenging task. They are not like normal children who usually learn by being told what to do and how to do it. The ABA method allows an autistic child to choose what he wants to do, which allows him/her to make decisions.
It involves changing the environment based on what choices you make. Through this method, a direct relationship is built between the desirable outcomes as per the environmental factors.

The Naturalistic Teaching Strategies involve creating an environment in which kids are motivated to act or communicate a specific want or need. To address the different abilities of autistic children as per the autism definition, the teaching strategies have different strands. One €Strand€ provides a vigilant environment designed to keep students with severe autism safe. At the other end, another €Strand€ helps kids who are high functioning, high achievers - often with Asperger Syndrome.

There is no one approach for every kind of Autism. For high functioning students, the focus is mainly on social skills besides the intense academics, as these students are very intelligent and extremely verbal.

The SCERTS (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Transactional Support) is another method based on 25 years of research. The SCERTS method identifies and builds on a student'sstrengths, then creates a strategy to improve the student's weaknesses. Through SCERTS, teachers train parents to deal with complex struggles in parenting an autistic.

Another great teaching strategy is the €Modeling€ treatment, which requires the child to imitate a task. By asking an autistic child to imitate you in normal tasks like building blocks, can help ease his frustration in understanding what he needs to do next and also what is expected. This method helps an autistic child build his social and abstract forms to the best of his ability.

The above strategies help us to be a lot more structured when dealing with the Autism Spectrum Disorder.
