Protect the ears from blows. Wrestlers, boxers and those who participate in contact sports should wear headgear that also protects the ears. When piercing the ear, be sure to use caution. If the cartilage is being pierced, it is especially important to take care of the piercing. Infections to the cartilage can cause permanent damage and ruin the look of the nicest of earrings.

Only use a washcloth covered finger to clean the ear. Never put small items into the ear canal for cleaning, including any cotton swabs. The structure is very narrow and these tools can damage it. Upper respiratory infections can also spread to the ears. Certain medications may cause problems with ear health. Be sure to take the prescribed medication in accordance with the label directions.

If you smoke, stop. Tobacco use can affect the health of the ears. Smokers are more likely to have problems than those who do not.

Genetics may affect the health of one's ears. If problems develop, a hearing aid may help. They can be fitted to amplify the noises that need to be heard while cancelling the background noises.
