Customizing Your Wheelchair Accessories for Style

Function is the first priority, but aesthetics are just plain fun.
Manufacturers don't really think about good looks when they design things like ramps and lifts for wheelchairs because they want the products to appeal to a wide audience - but you have your own tastes and preferences.
Are you looking for a way to accessorize your gear to suit your style, or are you looking to treat a friend or loved one to a mobility makeover? This guide is for you.
Fun Ideas for Temporary and Permanent Changes This guide will cover wheelchair lifts and ramps for both vehicles and homes.
These two items never seem to get any love.
Wheelchair lifts are the hardest things to customize.
Vehicle lifts are easy to paint and matching the color of your vehicle is a cool way to give your entire ride a nice cohesive look.
You can use the bottom of your lift as a canvas if it folds up when not in use.
It's always better to talk to the lift manufacturer before painting any moving parts, though, because retaining the integrity of the machine is the most important part.
For indoor lifts, the sky is the limit.
You don't have to worry about weatherproofing or anything.
Stick-on wall decals work great on smooth surfaces, and even textured plastics are paintable if you find the right paint.
The wall decals are our favorite though because you can remove them easily if you decide to sell your lift to upgrade to a better model.
Decals are also a great way to personalize a lift for a child whose tastes are likely to change over the years.
Ramps are another matter altogether.
Do not ever paint the surface of a ramp, unless you are purchasing traction paint and you'll still want to get the manufacturer's approval before doing anything that could cause slips.
The sides of the ramp are free game though.
Many ramps are black or silver in color, so bright neon duct tape makes great-looking stripes.
Paint works too though.
Are you excited about upgrading your accessories? You might choose to make your lifts and ramps (or anything else you may have lying around awaiting prettification) match your wheelchair, or your vehicle, maybe your home, or your favorite sports team - the options are endless.
Whichever way you decide to decorate, we hope you end up with accessories you can truly enjoy looking at.
